Plot

Emilia Perez follows four extraordinary women in Mexico, each in search of her own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita, an under-appreciated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as her true self. Karla Sofia Gascon discusses the two years of preparation it took for this demanding role in Jacques Audiard’s film, and the two extremes of her own personality she had to portray as Emilia and Manitas. Jacques Audiard said he was inspired for the idea for the musical by a chapter in a novel about a drug lord who longs to change his identity.

Most of the story is presented with musical numbers so if you’re not into that kind of genre, stay away from it

Along the way we have Selena Gomez playing Jessi, the drug lord’s wife adjusting to a new life with the children she raised with him after the sex change she knows nothing about. Then of course we have Karla Sofia Gascon playing Emilia Perez, the drug lord who changed gender and continues to build her empire (not “he” anymore). This particular movie had a very strange effect on me after it ended as I went in blind and to be honest, that’s what you have to do because the movie overall is very unexpected in places and quite comical as well. After the director and cast introduced it to us, the movie started and the audience spread laughter and joy to some of the aspects of the movie and I appreciate that.

The musical performance at the end was boring in my opinion but I think it summed up the story a bit

The movie shines best with its amazing cinematography (which was amazing to say the least), the powerful acting by everyone involved and some of the musical numbers. Now, why I say “some” of the musical numbers, is because most of them are quite good and impactful to the story but as the movie progressed, the musical numbers became a lot less flashy than before and became cliché because of this. But don’t take my word for it, because there is a movie for everyone’s taste and I really liked some of the elements of this movie and I think most of you will too when it comes out soon enough. Overall, even though it’s not as good as I expected, Emilia Perez is still a cinematic achievement in musical numbers and a great performance that really makes the movie even more interesting and fun.

If you like musicals, give Emilia Perez a chance, I think it successfully delivers on what audiences can expect from it.
