His characters are always grounded and he’s extremely good at casting. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The writing has to be as good, if not better, than the men’s. Women are smarter, more sophisticated. Beth from Yellowstone (outstanding character and performance), the barrel riders, the lone ranch hand (the fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter), all great female characters who fit into the world of the story effortlessly and naturally. They are strong and compelling.
Not just the “partner of…” or T&A. He stepped up his game with Faith Hill’s excellent character crushed in “1883” (1883). Zoe Saldana is now doing some of the best stuff of her career. I absolutely believe her as the head of the CIA in an open marriage (nice touch). I accept De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage who will not give up, and thank you, thank you, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her get the better of a comrade with a hundred extra pounds of muscle. .
I think her character is much more interesting if she’s someone who needs to be knocked out or just beaten to the ground before she gives up. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner or should I say her hair? And the face! From schmaltzy Hallmark dreck to super bad promos? I buy it. Special mention: Ms.
I’m looking forward to the arc that this loose cannon takes as long as they continue to avoid the cliché of teenage angst. Good actor, this could get interesting…
